Reading the radio
How you read the radio will depend on how you’ve connected it to your PC:
Motorola Mobile Radios
Connected via GCAI cable (front) |
1. Connect the GCAI cable to the front MIC port, and connect the USB end to your PC. 2. Power on the radio and launch Tetra CPS 3. After Windows Installs the device driver, the radio display will turn yellow/orange. Within about 60 seconds the radio will appear within Tetra CPS on the right side of the screen. 4. Right-click on the radio (not the display) and click Read Radio. |
Connected via FTDI cable (rear) |
1. Turn the radio off 2. Connect your FTDI cable to the rear of the radio: MTM800: Radio Pin 8 = Black FTDI cable Radio Pin 19 = Yellow FTDI cable Radio Pin 20 = Orange FTDI cable Radio Pin 6 shorted to Radio Pin 13 (this puts the radio in programming mode). 3. Connect your FTDI cable to a USB port on your PC 4. Power the radio on. Note: The display will remain completely blank while pins 6 and 13 are shorted. 5. In Tetra CPS, Select Tools > Detect Radio on RS232 Port. This will take a minute or two. 6. If successful, the dialog box will turn green and your radio will appear on the right. Read the radio by right clicking it and choosing Read Radio. Note: If you’re running CPS on a virtual machine, you may notice that your USB FTDI cable keeps connecting and disconnecting. If this occurs, reconnect it by selecting it from the USB menu in your VM software. |
Motorola Portables

After Windows Installs the device driver, launch Tetra CPS. The radio will begin to display text on the screen. Within a few moments, the radio will appear on the right of CPS. 4. Right-click on the radio and click Read Radio. |
Radios with no keypad (CEP400) |
1. Turn the radio off and connect the programming cable to the bottom accessory port. 2. While holding the two keys on the side of the radio (above and below the PTT button), Power on the radio. Nothing will appear on the display. 3. After Windows Installs the device driver, launch Tetra CPS. The radio will begin to display text on the screen. Within a few moments, the radio will appear on the right of CPS. 4. Right-click on the radio and click Read Radio. |
Sepura Mobiles and Portables
Any Sepura Radio |
It is not possible to “read” the programming on a Sepura radio. The software is designed to only write an existing programming template to a radio. |
Important
Always ensure you save a backup of your radio codeplug after reading it. Also ensure you never use the “wipe radio” command – as this completely wipes the entire radio, essentially bricking it. |
